'Crazy from the Heat' by Nanc, nanim_uk@yahoo.com, 10-31-02 --- Keywords: MSR, 155+ word, Mulder POV Rating: PG for slightly negative images Spoiler: The Truth Disclaimer: no infringement intended Summary: Written for the e-muse Halloween challenge. --- Why hideout in Death Valley? As Scully said, no one comes to look for -anyone- here. Even Reticulans would melt in this heat. I'm dizzy; I think my brain must be warping. October 31st and 98 degrees. Mother Nature's Halloween trick. And of course this dump has no A.C. - it barely has running water. But its not me I'm worried about today... its our dog. Poor C.B.E., if we'd known that we'd end up here we never would have adopted him. He just lays there, panting. This tomb of heat is affecting Scully too. Just yesterday she shouted 'heat stroke will get us all'. I can't stand by and just watch it happen. I've got to do something. I watch the dog a bit longer, then I go and get my 3rd gun, the one that only the Gunmen knew I owned. My head throbs as I watch C.B.E. through our kitchen window while I quietly load up. 'He won't know what hit him', I think to myself. 'Its better this way'. I step out into the yard and pull the trigger. He yelps. I can't stop, I continue to fire. I look up in time to see Scully appear at the screen door. Her eyes go wide as I turn the gun toward her. Everything seems to slow as she watches me pull the trigger one more time. Nothing. I'm out of ammo. She turns and bolts to the front of the house. Damn. I'll have to be fast if I want to reload before she's found her own weapon. I run back into the kitchen to get more ammo. Luckily it only takes 10 seconds to reload a SuperSoaker. --- end --- *C.B.E.... canine biological entity ;-)
